Have your say about what the future should look like

A decent supply of affordable housing and adequate modern business space underpin our ability to generate long term sustainable growth and a thriving economy, which will benefit the whole community.

Bath and North East Somerset Council is currently running a consultation about the Local Plan, which is all about options for development in the district over the coming years. The decisions about the number of houses and where they go, as well as the availability of workspace will have a crucial impact on the future, so it is essential that business people make their opinions heard.

I know businesses don’t have a vote, but the owners, managers and the general workforce who are residents certainly do and it would be great if they engaged with the process, even though it may seem all a bit dry.

I feel a bit sorry for the Council in this case because they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They have had a new housing target foisted on them by Government and it will be a struggle to find sufficient sites and they are certain to face considerable opposition virtually anywhere they suggest might be suitable. People are generally in favour of more housing, just not anywhere near where they live.

On the other hand, Councillors and officers appreciate the value of a strong local economy, providing goods and services, jobs, wages and opportunities for our young people. They know housing and work space plays a huge part in that.

So, how do we solve the puzzle ? First, the proposals need to be proportionate and in keeping with their setting. Some years back, I was a member of a Parish Council and there was real concern about  the idea of building houses on a former factory site. But now it’s clear the development has been a great success, allowing some people to downsize, whilst remaining in the village, and at the same time attracting young families with children who bring fresh energy. That’s a model that will work in the rural areas.

Of course, that example won’t go close to reaching the big target. That will require some large developments that will only come about with considerable political courage, which is where the voice of the business community comes in. By individual businesses making the case for actions which will allow economic growth we can strengthen the resolve of elected members to do the right thing, even when they come under intense political heat from constituents.

So, please take a few minutes to look at the options being presented and have your say. You can make a difference if you make your views known. And if you don’t ? Well, you know who to blame !
